Mayu & Hilton – A Love Story

A Canadian couple – Mayu & Hilton are who we are about to get to know today. Sometimes when you feel like luck isn’t coming your way, you end up meeting the love of your life.

Our Story

Anything less than mad, passionate, extraordinary love is a waste of time. There are too many mediocre things in life to deal with and love shouldn’t be one of them” – Tiffanie DeBartolo

Fate, serendipity, coincidence, whatever you may call it, by some chance of events, I was lucky enough to meet a man that is anything but mediocre. Our story began three years ago, on a day I thought my luck was down, but little did I know that it was the start of something extraordinary.

It was my first day at a new company, and as my luck would have it, I had not only woken up late, but on my way to work I realized I was low on gas. And of course, by the time I finally made it to work, I couldn’t find a parking spot anywhere. I frantically drove around the parking lot in circles, waiting for someone to leave. Finally, on what seemed like my 100th circle around the lot, I saw a man waiving, and directing my attention to a newly freed parking spot. As I parked the car and ran to work, I waived back to the stranger to show my gratitude.  But as I like to think, that interaction wasn’t enough to appease the universe. It turned out that as I was rushing to make it to work, my phone had slipped out of my jacket pocket. I hadn’t even realized, until I felt a tap on my shoulder and the mysterious stranger, that had already saved my butt once that morning, handed me my phone. This time I wasn’t so quick to run to work. Our friendship grew as we constantly bumped into each other at work and social events. The rest was history.

I sometimes I wonder what would have happened had I not been late that day, or if I had decided not to accept that job offer, but I know the love that I share with my husband, Hilton, was destined to be. There is no one who can get me through my worst days like Hilton, and no one I’d rather spend my best days with. I cannot imagine my life with anyone else. He is my soulmate, and I believe we would have found each other one way or another.

Our Wedding

Although my husband is Catholic, and I am Hindu, religion has never been a problem for us. We have always been respectful and open to combining practices from both our faiths. We were lucky enough to have families that were supportive of this as well. We decided to have two ceremonies to honor both aspects of our lives (getting to wear both a wedding dress and a wedding saree was an added bonus). We had our Catholic wedding at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Toronto, Ontario. Our Hindu ceremony took place at Paradise Banquet Hall in Vaughan, Ontario.

Wedding planning, as most brides will tell you, is stressful but planning two different religious ceremonies meant double the stress! No matter how early you starting planning, the last month before the wedding will be intense. Your to-do list will have a hundred things that somehow slipped through the cracks, and by that point you’ll be so tired of wedding planning that you’re on the verge of eloping. But it’s during this time that you see the real strength of your support system. From the late nights making paper flowers to spending an entire day looking for the right bangles, the amazing people in my life sacrificed their time and energy to bring my dream wedding to life. My sister Jananie and best friend Sinthu, were especially vital to my sanity. These amazing girls ran around with me for over a year and stuck by me, even through my bridezilla moments, as the wedding details came together. It was only because I had my family and friends there, every step of the way, that I was able to stay sane through the stress of planning two wedding ceremonies.

My best advice for future brides: don’t be afraid to lean on your support system (delegate, delegate, delegate) and to enjoy the day because it will be over in the blink of an eye!
